The Campaign

The European Sustainable Wines campaign is funded by the European Union for the promotion of PDO wines in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam, under Regulation (EU) No 1144/2014.

Main campaign objectives

What is Sustainability?

Even though the idea of “Sustainability” is commonly linked to the idea of organic production, this concept covers different sub-concepts related to environmental, economic or social impact.

Organic viticulture is environmentally friendly and generates a minimal environmental impact. Vineyards also provide a green lung of enormous environmental value.

Wine production is one of the major drivers of our region economy. The wine industry helps to keep a permanent population in the rural areas.

Wines are produced using traditional techniques that keep agricultural traditions alive. The wine culture has always been a tradition for the people of our lands.

European PDOs

The EU Geographical indications system protects the names of products that originate from specific regions, have specific qualities or enjoy a reputation linked to the production territory.

Product names registered as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) are those that have the strongest links to the place in which they are made. To receive the PDO status, the entire product must be traditionally and entirely manufactured within the specific region and thus acquire unique properties.

The quality or properties are significantly or exclusively determined by the geographical environment, including natural and human factors, whose production, processing and preparation takes place within the determined geographical area.
